Val d’Isere, here we come

Betty & I have managed to escape another Christmas in the UK. Yes we have booked a 10 day trip in France. We have booked in to the Cretes Blanches Hotel It’s basic but clean and has plenty of room. link to the hotel web site below.

The plan was to drive down to Dover and catch the 6.40am ferry to Calais. Well if you know Betty and I you will know that we missed the 6.40 ferry but got on the 7.30 instead. This was mainly due to Betty choosing to not hear that we needed to leave at 4.30am in the pub the previous evening and then trying to spring clean the house before we left. Or was it the 5 pints of Stellar we had that made us late leaving home??

No problem we were on our way and just a bit late. The drive down through France takes about 8.30 hours to the resort, but as we got to Chambery the snow was falling thick and fast, so, we stopped off to get a new set of snow chains. I still had last years chains but they had taken a bit of abuse and I wasn’t confident that they would stay in one piece. Back in the car and heading up the mountain if you have ever driven up to Val d’Isere you will know that it is one of the more spectacular drives up the Tarentise valley and it is not that step and winding like some drive to resorts, but it was about 7.30 and dark and snowing hard. The locale Gendarmerie were stopping all the traffic to make sure you either had snow tyres or snow chains. If not they would not let you any further up the mountain. So in we pulled and about 40 minutes later the snow chains were on my jeans and gloves were soaked but we could carry on and made it into resort at about 8.30.

Betty and I have been coming here for many years and here are a selection of photos from previous years.
